Wikimedia projects
Wikimedia content is organized by project and language. Each project hosts a different type of free contentâencyclopedia articles on Wikipedia, dictionary entries on Wiktionaryâand can be published under a different free license. Wikimedia API requests include the project name in the URL. Use this page to explore different projects that you can access with the Wikimedia API.
Single-language projects
Most Wikimedia projects are created and maintained in a single language. This means that what we think of as Wikipedia is really over 300 different WikipediasâEnglish Wikipedia, Cebuano Wikipedia, Swedish Wikipedia, and many moreâall writing original articles in their own language. For single-language projects, Wikimedia API requests include the language code in the URL. Available languages vary by project; visit the site matrix for a complete list of projects and languages.
About language codes: Language codes are used as subdomains for Wikimedia projects. Based on ISO 639-1 and ISO 639-2, language codes are usually two or three letters, such as en
for English, es
for Spanish, and ar
for Arabic. To find a language code, visit the site matrix.

Multilingual projects
Some projects are maintained in English and translated into other languages, or they are created to be language neutral. These multilingual projects use the project name as the subdomain instead of a language code. Wikimedia API requests to multilingual projects should not include a language code in the URL.
